Twitter trademarking TWEET. Powerplay, Problem or Pushiness

In a recent post Twitter reveals that it has applied for the trademark Tweet.
They say the justification is that it is clearly attached to the name Twitter from a brand perspective.  I couldn’t agree more. it is definitely associated with twitter, that’s why there are hundreds or possibly thousands of domain names out there in the marketplace with the word tweet in them.  (This being one of them) The reason we use tweet (obviously) is that the reason we exist, we are on the twitter topic.

In the post Twitter state they have no intention of “going after” applications and services that have the word tweet It just allows then power if they come across a confusing or damaging project.

It all sounds terribly responsible. however, We are talking  about an incredibly fast   growing business that could someday rival Google.

Fast forward 5 years, will justification to sue for monetary compensation for the use of the word tweet start happening because a newbie VP in twitter legal sees short term gains in doing so. …. ? I am speculating.

I see this move as agressive.   WIthout belaboring the what if’s … What if I write something that Twitter does not like Will they try and control my content ?

I see this as a powerplay That could be a potential problem for people associated with the word Tweet.  I hope my concern  amounts to nothing and the Twitter guys act responsibly in this regard.

Time will tell.
